Boston addresses carry the history of 3484 Washington Street, home to Doyle’s Café from 1882 until it closed in 2019 — a favorite of local and national politicians, and the bar where Samuel Adams Boston Lager was first put on tap. The redevelopment brings the café back alongside a ground-floor grocery market, with sixteen condominiums on four floors above and structured residential parking behind. Fitting that parking into what remains of a dense Jamaica Plain corner lot took a Wöhr Combilift 543 — a three-level semi-automatic system with a pit below and a stacked level above, all accessed from a single middle tier. Residents select a space from the control panel; the platforms slide and lift until the requested one arrives at the entry level, behind sliding gates that open only once it’s in position. 23 parking spaces now sit where a conventional garage would have fit a fraction of that — the difference between a project that houses sixteen families and a project that doesn’t get built
