Affordable Housing Parking System in San Jose, CAWöhr Combilift 552 puzzle lift, 50 spaces, at Alta in San Jose's Alum Rock neighborhood
Set on a 1.3-acre site just east of Interstate 680 in San José’s Alum Rock neighborhood, this two-building affordable development rises six stories and replaces a long-vacant commercial property with 164 homes above ground-floor retail — 92 studios, 58 one-bedrooms, and 14 two-bedrooms serving households earning between 30% and 70% of area median income. Both buildings share a connected podium, where the Wöhr Combilift 552 carries the parking load: a semi-automatic system that stacks vehicles on two levels and arranges them in rows front to back. Platforms shift laterally at the entry level to open a vacant grid, the requested platform moves into place, and that open grid is positioned so a driver can pass through the front row to reach a space behind it. The system delivers 50 parking spaces within a podium footprint that conventional stalls and drive aisles would have quickly exhausted.
