Affordable Housing Parking System in San Jose, CAWöhr Combilift 552 puzzle lift, 90 spaces, at Villa Del Sol in San Jose's Alum Rock Urban Village
A six-story mixed-use building in San José’s Alum Rock Urban Village, Villa Del Sol pairs ground-floor commercial space with 194 homes, all of them deed-restricted as affordable and serving households earning between 30% and 70% of area median income. With the entire parking program confined to a single ground-floor podium beneath the residential levels, the project relies on the Wöhr Combilift 552, a semi-automatic system that parks vehicles on two levels stacked above one another and in multiple rows front to back. A driver requests a space from a central control; the platforms in the way shift laterally to open a gap, the requested platform moves into position, and the vacant grid in the front row is positioned so the driver can pass straight through to reach a space in the rear row. The result is 90 parking spaces in a podium footprint that would otherwise have been consumed by drive aisles and turning radii.
